Why visit San Blas by boat?

Most of San Blas can't be reached by land. Many visitors see it on a day trip to a few islands near the port. That's a good start, but the archipelago is much bigger than that.

On a boat, you keep going. We sail our guests about 40 minutes deeper than other tours, to the outer islands where the reefs are healthier, the water is clearer and you might have a beach to yourself.

    What a boat gives you

  • Remote islands that no road or ferry reaches
  • Snorkeling straight off the back of the boat
  • Sunrise and sunset at anchor, with no one around
  • Fresh fish, often caught the same day

The freedom of boat life

A day on a boat has its own rhythm. You wake up at anchor, swim before breakfast, and decide over coffee which island is next. The captain knows where the wind and weather are good, so the plan follows the sun.

Most of our trips are all-inclusive: the crew cooks on board, often with what came out of the sea that morning. You don't need any sailing experience. If you want to learn, some captains will happily hand you the helm.

Meet the Guna Yala

San Blas is Guna Yala, a territory governed by the Guna people, who have lived on these islands for generations. Visiting by boat is a chance to meet them on their terms.

Depending on your route, you can stop at a community island, buy molas (the colorful hand-sewn panels Guna women are known for) from the women who made them, or share a fish lunch cooked by a local family. A few simple habits go a long way: ask before photographing people, pay the small island fees, and leave every island as you found it.

How to get to San Blas

San Blas is 2.5 to 3 hours from Panama City. A 4x4 picks you up at your hotel around 5:00 AM, drives through the jungle to the port, and a boat takes you to your island or sailboat. Everyone pays a $22 entrance fee in cash at the port, and you'll need your original passport.

We arrange the transport for every trip we book. The shared 4x4 is $65 per person each way. See times, prices and private options →

MariaThree nights on a catamaran

This amazing agency booked us a 3-day cruise in the San Blas Islands. They showed us all the options and boats that were available and finally closed the option that best suits us and our budget. We were on a big yacht with a nice captain who cooked us 3 meals a day and sailed with us to the most beautiful and unspoiled islands of San Blas. We saw dolphins, sharks you can swim with and starfish. Everything was just perfect. Once in a lifetime experience.

Great service, great experience. We've booked a 3 night charter. Ido has been really helpful and communicative and has matched us with the most perfect sailboat, with a team of 2 (captain and crew / cook). We had a magical time and one of our top highlights!

Jacqueline Kirsch2 nights on a sailboat

We had 2 amazing nights on the sailboat. Sea Gypsy organized everything so well and helped us with all our questions. The trip itself was an absolute adventure and we had the best food! The cook even convinced me that I actually like octopus, which I usually never do. We went snorkeling and even saw a shark! It was breathtaking and all the beautiful islands are just stunning!

It was a dream of mine to visit the beautiful San Blas islands by boat and Sea Gypsy made it happen! They recommended the perfect yacht for our group. Highlights were visiting an island inhabited by a local Guna family, enjoying a fish BBQ on the beach, and relaxing in a hammock strung between palm trees. I can't wait to go back!

Orit MadarOne night on a catamaran · translated from Hebrew

An extraordinary experience. Worth the trip even though we only had one night on the catamaran (we warmly recommend staying two nights or more). Service above and beyond, a comfortable, well-equipped catamaran and above all a captain and chef who did everything so we'd experience San Blas to the max. Ido coordinated our trip and everything was perfect!
